Généralement considéré comme l'autre sommet discographique du groupe (avec Among the Living), Persistence of Time va pourtant être un échec commercial. Le groupe est alors distancé chez les adeptes du genre par les amis/concurents Metallica. Curieusement, l'une des grandes réussites de l'album est "Got the Time", une reprise de Joe Jackson.
