Depuis la parution de leur premier album, Madness aligne les hits, leurs chansons successives ne quittant pratiquement jamais les classements. "Presents the Rise & Fall" est une sorte d'aboutissement, l'album de la maturité. Il dresse un portrait satirique de l'esprit anglais, à la façon du très british "Village Green" des Kinks, et contient leur plus gros succès : "Our House".
