En gardant une puissance intacte, "This Is the Sea" se distingue par son raffinement et sa majestuosité orchestrale, le sax d'Anthony Thistlethwaite, les cuivres et le violon de Steve Wickham. Grand sommet de l'album, l'énorme "The Whole of the Moon" est un hit en angleterre. Bien qu'il soit infiniment soigné, cet album conserve une certaine rugoristé proche parfois des Pogues ou, plus souvent, de Bob Dylan dans ses moments éléctriques les plus déchirés.
