Totalement en phase avec le prog rock de son temps, East of Eden brasse à souhait les sources et styles musicaux (blues, jazz, folk, classique), laissant une large place à l'impro et l'expérimentation. Le groupe a un solide carré de fans (notamment londonnien). Mais il se sépare en 78 sans avoir jamais connu le succès commercial des King Crimson ou Jethro Tull. Ron Caines, Dave Arbus et Geoff Nicholson, les trois membres fondateurs, recommenceront à enregistrer à la fin des années 90 dans le style de leur deux premiers albums.
